Retreats with God
He leads me beside the still waters...He restores my soul...
One of the main ways that I have always experienced a close connection with God is through music. Something about hearing biblical truth put to melody opens up my heart to experience His love and paves the way for my quiet time. I love corporate worship at church and individual worship when I can lift up the Lord on my own.
When I've been listening lately, I've been starting to look up and meditate on all the scripture references that I hear in the songs to truly grasp the treasure of God's truth and "digest" it more. So I sat down to listen to a song, jotted down all the related scriptures I could find, and then listened to the song again with a heart that was full of the Word and ready to really pour out His praises.
There are so many songs that I listen to on a regular basis to help align my heart for prayer time, but I thought I would start with the 6 that have been on repeat for me lately. My hope is that God uses this list and the bible references to help you dig into His Word and genuine worship at the same time. I pray it ignites a passion in you for your own "retreat" with God.
Prepare Your Heart
Before delving in, I find that my heart is sometimes so heavy with being weighed down with sin that I feel the need to confess to Him first, and just be open, honest, and real about wanting to worship Him with a pure heart. If you feel similarly, I encourage you to read and meditate on 1 John 1:9:
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Follow it up with full assurance that He has forgiven you and nothing stands between you and Him because of what Jesus has done! And then invite Him into your time and ask Him to show you more of who He is.
Soak in Scripture
You could certainly just look these songs up and listen to them casually, but you will get so much more out of this process if you carve out some precious alone time in solitude with you and God. Have your Bible nearby, a journal, pen, a highlighter even, and your earphones. And if you find yourself wanting to be completely absorbed in the Word, learn how to get access to the scripture-saturated 6 day devotional.
This song is so soft and I just love the combination of instruments in the sound. Most of all though, I love that it emphasizes God's MERCY. He lovingly rescued us from the penalty of death that we deserve as sinners and made us His own to be with Him forever.
Check out the lyric video and as you listen to the lyrics, don't forget to dig into the following verses. Let the Word speak to you! And if you're feeling like you'd like more than just a list of verses, journey with me through them by getting the 6 day devotional that accompanies this post.
Ephesians 2:1-9 Psalm 119:76-77
Ephesians 1:13 Psalm 51:1
This song motivates me to purify my heart before God and is basically a prayer to do just that as an act of spiritual worship. Check out the lyric video and pray through the lyrics if you feel so led.
1 John 4:16
There is also a version of this by Lauren Daigle, and I love both versions. The words are so simple yet so powerful and nudge us to surrender all that we are to the Savior. I've attached numerous verses that you could dig into to search your heart as you give it a listen.
Philippians 4:7 1 Kings 8:58 1 Chronicles 28:9
Psalm 119:11 Hebrews 10:22 Psalm 51:10, 17
Colossians 3:3 Romans 12:1 Romans 8:2
This song is saturated with the gospel and I just love that. Everytime I listen to it I tear up a little, just thinking how amazing it is that Jesus conquered death and sin and Has rescued us in His love! Sit and listen and just bask in what He has done for you.
These lyrics are full of such genuine and heartfelt worship and love for the Savior. And after what He has done for us, His love and grace motivates us to love Him with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. He is worth it all!
Psalm 27:4, 14 Psalm 16:11 Philippians 3:14
Psalm 89:17 Romans 8:18,30 2 Corinthians 4:17
2 Thessalonians 1:10 Philippians 1:21 Acts 7:54-60
2 Corinthians 5:14-15 Psalm 62:5 Colossians 1:3-4
This ought to be our anthem as Christ followers: realizing that God's love casts out all fear, counting shame for Him as honor, counting earthly gain for loss. May your heart lean into glorifying Him through this song! Here are the lyrics and sheet music, and you can listen to it here.
1 John 4:18
1 Corinthians 6:20

Hi, I'm Tessa! I suppose I could sum myself up by confessing I am a crazy cat lady, amateur sewist, nature lover, bookworm, fabric fanatic, mental health advocate, craft enthusiast, tea addict, and an 'old soul.' Jesus is my all in all, and I'm so thankful that His love NEVER fails.
